【Chiemsee】A Great Getaway Near Munich

Just about an hour away from Munich by train, Chiemsee is the largest body of water in Bavaria and one of the most famous natural attractions in the world. 🏞️🏡💐 The lake is crystal clear and sparkling, with stunning scenery, and the majestic Alps stretch out before your eyes. 🏔️✨ To visit, travelers first arrive at the pier on Chiemsee and then take a boat to explore the islands. Except during the winter ice season, the Chiemsee ferry runs all year, with daily trips from 8 am to 6 pm. You can either visit for the day or stay overnight in one of the island’s inns. ⛴️🌅 Chiemsee is home to three islands: Herreninsel (Men's Island): The largest island, once home to an Augustinian monastery, is famous for the grand palace of "Fairy Tale King" Ludwig II. 👑🏰 Krautinsel (Children's Island): The smallest of the three, it’s uninhabited and has always served as a vegetable garden and pasture. 🌱🚜 Fraueninsel (Women's Island): Known for housing one of the world’s oldest Benedictine monasteries, this island is still home to a few nuns and has been deeply influenced by key periods of European history. ⛪🌿 The vibe of Fraueninsel is quite different from Herreninsel. Due to time constraints, I decided to focus on the rich history and culture of Fraueninsel for my first trip to Chiemsee. Fraueninsel is a small island, only about 12 hectares in size, and you can walk around it in about 30 minutes. 🚶‍♀️ There are no cars or bikes on the island, and it’s home to around 50 houses with nearly 250 residents. Each family has their own boat and dock for easy travel. 🚤🏡 To me, the whole island feels like an isolated little village, completely cut off from the world. The Bavarian-style houses are adorned with beautiful gardens, pathways, and flowers everywhere. 🌸🏡 It’s the perfect place to describe as “facing the lake, where spring blossoms.” Spending a quiet week here, away from the world, to relax and clear your mind sounds so peaceful. 🌿💆‍♀️ #Chiemsee #WhatToDoInMunich #MunichDayTrips #MunichGetaway
