As the capital of Bavaria in southern Germany, I started from the city’s heart, Marienplatz (Mary’s Square), and explored the city center in just 2 hours. Founded in 1158, this city—blending classic elegance and modern vibe—gets its name from “Mönch” (monk), as it began as a settlement near a monastery. Once the royal capital of the Kingdom of Bavaria, it was hailed as “Germany’s Athens” in the 19th century. Yet it was also the cradle of the Nazi Party, bearing a heavy and complex history. 1️⃣ Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) A striking Gothic Revival building on Marienplatz.
