🇩🇪 World Heritage Site #29: Bauhaus City Dessau

My first encounter with Bauhaus was years ago at an exhibition in Beijing's National Museum 🏛️. The moment I stepped in, I was captivated by its seamless fusion of function and beauty—clean lines, minimalist yet striking designs (though the lighting and curation definitely helped!). Over time, I grew to appreciate this revolutionary art movement even more. This year, I finally got to visit key Bauhaus cities, and Dessau was a must-stop. 🏠 In 1925, the Bauhaus School relocated to Dessau, marking a pivotal era (1925-1932) in its history. Today, the city boasts 300+ Bauhaus buildings, all embodying the principle: "Form follows function" (Form folgt Funktion). Among them, three are UNESCO World Heritage Sites: 🔹 1. Bauhaus Building 📍 Gropiusallee 38 • Designed by Walter Gropius (Bauhaus' first director). • Now houses the Bauhaus Foundation 🏛️ + a small exhibition, café, and restaurant. • Open to visitors—great for photos! 📸 🔹 2. Masters' Houses 📍 Ebertallee 59 • Homes for Bauhaus legends like Gropius, Paul Klee, and Kandinsky 🎨. • Similar but uniquely tailored designs. • Honestly? We skipped the paid tour and just wandered around after hours—so did everyone else (met 3-4 private guides along the way 😂). 🔹 3. Laubenganghäuser (Balcony Access Houses) 📍 Peterholzstraße 40, 48, 56 & Mittelbreite 6, 14 • Designed by Hannes Meyer (Bauhaus' second director). • Philosophy: "People's needs, not luxury" (Volksbedarf statt Luxusbedarf). • 48m² but brilliantly laid out—3 rooms + central heating, kitchen, bathroom 🚿.
