🇮🇷 Iran | Isfahan: A Guide to the Ancient City of a Thousand Years

Today, I’m introducing a city that dates back millennia—once the capital of Persia in the 5th century BC. A hub of merchants and travelers, its prosperity was so legendary that it inspired a Persian proverb. Rich in history and home to stunning ancient architecture, many Chinese travelers fondly call it "Iran’s Xi’an." This is Isfahan, a jewel in central Iran. 📚 About Isfahan As a city that served as the capital multiple times since the Achaemenid Empire, Isfahan has always held a pivotal place in Iran’s history. A crossroads for travelers and a treasure trove of cultural heritage, its ancient grandeur earned the Persian saying, "Isfahan is half the world"—a testament to its past splendor. ⛲ Where to Go Most attractions are centered around Naqsh-e Jahan Square, with a few slightly farther sites like the Si-o-se-pol Bridge still within walking distance. 1️⃣ Si-o-se-pol (33 Arches Bridge) The iconic symbol of Isfahan, built in the 16th century under Shah Abbas I. Famous for its 33 arches, it’s a photographer’s dream—especially at dusk when the lights illuminate the bridge, casting golden reflections (if the river isn’t dry!). After sunset, local musicians play under the arches, creating a magical atmosphere. 2️⃣ Naqsh-e Jahan Square The heart of Isfahan and the world’s second-largest square. Flanked by mosques and palaces to the south and the Grand Bazaar to the north, it’s surrounded by restaurants and cafes. At night, join locals on the grassy lawns to soak in the slow-paced vibe. 3️⃣ Chehel Sotun Palace (40 Columns Palace) Built by Shah Abbas I to host foreign ambassadors, this palace gets its name from its 20 mirrored columns reflecting in the pool, creating the illusion of 40. Best visited at night for surreal symmetry shots. 4️⃣ Mosques & Palaces Highlights include: Ali Qapu Palace: A Safavid-era music hall with intricate murals. Imam Mosque & Jameh Mosque: The former is grand and awe-inspiring; the latter spans three different architectural eras in one complex.
