🇮🇷 Tehran’s Landmark: The Azadi Tower 🗼

The Azadi Tower (Freedom Tower) is a landmark of Tehran, located in Azadi Square in the west of the city. If you’re entering Tehran from the airport, you’ll definitely pass by this iconic structure. 🛣️ History of the Azadi Tower 🕰️ In 1966, during the reign of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, Iran’s oil wealth was booming due to cooperation with the United States. To celebrate the king’s authority, Queen Farah proposed the construction of new buildings, and the Azadi Tower was the first of these projects. 🏗️ The king ordered a nationwide design competition, and after selecting the winning design, construction began. The Shah even personally supervised the project. After 3 years of construction, the tower was completed in 1971 to commemorate the 2,500th anniversary of the Persian Empire (from Cyrus the Great to the Pahlavi dynasty). It was originally named the "King’s Memorial Tower." 👑 During the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the tower became a gathering place for protestors and was later renamed the "Freedom Memorial Tower" (Azadi Tower). ✊ Design and Features 🏛️ The tower stands 45 meters tall and is shaped like an inverted "Y" (resembling the Persian letter "𐭠"). Its modern design is covered with Isfahan marble. The top of the tower features an observation deck, while the basement houses a museum and a cinema. 🎥 Interestingly, there’s a large storage area beneath the tower filled with marble identical to that used in the tower’s construction. This was the Shah’s idea to ensure that any future damage could be repaired with matching materials. These stored marbles are said to last for 200 years. 💎 Surroundings 🌳 The area around the Azadi Tower is a vast square and green space, making it a popular spot for locals to relax and enjoy leisure time. 🌿 Admission: Free 🆓 #Iran 🇮🇷 #IranTravel ✈️ #Tehran 🏙️ #AzadiTower 🗼 #TravelStories 📖 #ShowYouTheWorld 🌍 #Landmarks 🏛️ #IranSights 👀 #CulturalSites 🕌 #MustVisit 📸
