🇮🇹 Perugia|For Lovers of Terracotta Roofs & Frescoes
I had zero expectations for Perugia—just a quick stop before Assisi—but wow, this "ordinary" town is full of surprises! A Bit of History Perugia, the capital of Umbria, may not be as famous as neighboring Tuscany, but it boasts ancient history, stunning art, and amazing food. Its roots trace back to the Etruscan civilization (think 2,000+ years of ruins—Italy’s Xi’an!). Art lovers, take note: This is the hometown of Perugino, Raphael’s teacher, with early Renaissance masterpieces scattered around. Foodies rejoice—Umbria produces bold red wines, truffles, and Baci chocolates (those hazelnut kisses!). And it’s cheap—a croissant + cappuccino for just €3! 🥐☕ Best of all? The arched alleys and postcard-perfect corners make it a dream for city walks. Getting There 🚂 From Florence/Rome: ~2h by train (~€10-15). 🚇 From Perugia Station: Hop on the miniMetro (tiny cute train, €1.50, credit card accepted). Get off at Pincetto, take the elevator up, and boom—you’re in the medieval old town! Must-See Spots 1️⃣ Nobile Collegio del Cambio A medieval exchange court covered in Perugino’s frescoes—so mesmerizing I stood there stunned for 10 mins! €6 entry (skip the €7 combo ticket with Collegio della Mercanzia—just one dull wooden room). 2️⃣ Best Panoramic Views 🌄 Sciri Tower: Free (donation-based). Climb 42m for old-town vistas, then visit Piazza San Francesco’s gorgeous facade. Carducci Gardens: Walk down to Rocca Paolina viewpoint, then sip Aperol at Punto di Vista bar 🍹. Terrazza del Mercato Coperto: Hidden gem! Enter near Sisley, and feast your eyes on terracotta roofs + Umbrian valleys. 3️⃣ Chapel of San Severo One wall of frescoes by Raphael & Perugino. €4—worth it if you’re a Renaissance nerd. 4️⃣ Piazza IV Novembre & Around San Lorenzo Cathedral (free): Houses the "Virgin Mary’s wedding ring" (allegedly!). Fontana Maggiore, Palazzo dei Priori, and National Gallery of Umbria (€10). 5️⃣ Perugina Chocolate Museum (if you have time!) 🍫 Food Picks 🍴 1️⃣ Antica Salumeria Granieri Amato: Viral roast pork sandwich—crispy bread, juicy meat. 🥪 2️⃣ Il Giurista: Michelin-starred—book ahead (I missed out, sigh). ✨ 3️⃣ Al Tartufo / Settimo Sigillo: Truffle heaven! I had purple gnocchi—unreal. 🍄 "Perugia is that quiet, artsy friend who secretly has the best stories. Don’t skip it!" 💛 #HiddenItaly #UmbriaTravel #ArtAndChocolate
