🇲🇽 Two P-Types’ 6-Day Mexico City Adventure: All the Lessons Learned
A must-read guide to avoid rookie mistakes in CDMX! 1️⃣ SIM Cards 📱 No unlimited data SIMs are widely available here. Easiest options: MOBO or OXXO. MOBO was slow 😤—switched to OXXO, which was fast! At OXXO, the cheapest is 50 pesos for 800MB total (not daily!). Recommend topping up around 200 pesos for 3GB—enough for 3 days. 2️⃣ Money Exchange 💵 Avoid exchanging right next to baggage claim at MEX—terrible rates! Once you exit, better exchange spots are outside. We spent ~500 USD in pesos for 2 people over 6 days. Most places take cards—cash is mainly for small vendors or emergencies. 3️⃣ Flights ✈️ We flew Volaris—lots of bad reviews online, but major airlines cost 2x more! ⚠️ If entering Mexico with a US visa (not a Mexican visa), you can’t check in online. Paid ~100 USD at the counter for one checked bag + boarding pass—CASH ONLY 💸! Glad we had cash on hand… 4️⃣ Safety 🛡️ Mexico City is quite safe if you’re smart. We stayed at ULIV Cibeles—apartment hotel with 24/7 security + code locks 🔒. Many convenience stores lock doors after midnight—you point, staff grab items 🏬→🚓. Polanco (wealthy area) feels very safe with guards everywhere—but traffic is awful at night! Locals are super friendly and warm 🥰, though English is limited. Google Translate saved us often! 🏨 ULIV Cibeles: Two rooms—one old, one new. Spacious, and even offered in-room spa! 👍 🏔️ Guanajuato: Stayed at Casa Del Rector—beautiful but water stopped at midnight… still not fixed. You win some, you lose some 😅.
