πΊπΈ A Classic American Weekend in Milwaukee, WI ππ
Itβs been a month since I came to the U.S. for summer research, so I decided to unwind this weekend! ποΈπ When I first arrived, I was a bit startled by the visible inequality and frequent police sirens π¨. A senior from the lab explained that Milwaukee was historically a redlined city due to segregation policies in the 1930s, which led to major wealth gaps and ongoing social challenges. I looked up safer areas to visit β neighborhoods like East Side, Third Ward, and Shorewood are generally considered safe π. Areas best avoided include: Metcalfe ParkNorth DivisionFranklin HeightsPark West Also, Milwaukee is huge and public transport is pretty much non-existent πβ. Getting around really depends on friends with cars π β really missing the easy transit in Ireland and the UK! Last weekend, I went downtown with an intern from another lab. The Milwaukee Public Market was so fun β full of food and cool local stuff π§π©! Milwaukee is also hosting SummerFest right now β the city is buzzing with energy! π΅πͺ During lunch at the campus cafeteria, I met a professor whoβs been doing research in the U.S. for over 10 years. We had a great conversation π β she gave me tons of advice and even invited me to her labβs gathering next week. Yesterday, she and her partner took me to Grant Park for hiking and relaxing at the beach ποΈ. We waded in the water, ate cherries π, and just chilled β such an ideal day! Next weekend, Iβm heading to Chicago with classmates β stay tuned for updates! πβ¨ #SummerResearch #TravelUSA #Milwaukee #AmericanWeekend #BeachDay #Hiking #CampusLife #StudyAbroad #USAdventures #GrantPark
