12 Offbeat & Subculture Spots in New Orleans 🧙♀️⚰️🎭
New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum A compact museum dedicated to Voodoo — you can make a wish at the shrine of Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau. Left me newly curious about African masks and spiritual traditions. Museum of Death I’d skipped the L.A. location, but the NOLA one had a strangely calming effect on me. Confronting the macabre deepened my gratitude for life — truly an experience of what Joseph Campbell called bhairavānanda (the “bliss of terror”). Mardi Gras World A warehouse storing the massive floats from Mardi Gras parades. The tour covers carnival history, and the larger-than-life sculptures make for epic photos! Storyville Museum A more traditional museum documenting New Orleans’ historic red-light district. JAMNOLA Described online as similar to Meow Wolf — but honestly, not quite on that level. Still, it’s very Instagrammable 🎨, with playful local-themed installations. Best visited once you know a bit about NOLA culture. St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 Requires a guided tour. See Marie Laveau’s tomb and Nicolas Cage’s $3+ million pyramid-shaped future grave 🏛️💀. Apparently, Cage is persona non grata in many New Orleans restaurants! Vampire Cafe A vampire-themed eatery famous for its “blood bag” drinks (with or without alcohol). The food’s good — just be ready for lots of garlic 😩🧛🏻♀️. Pirate King Coffee Pirate-themed café — as a former Bahamas resident, it was fun seeing my old Caribbean pirate pals again ☠️☕. Reverend Zombie's House Of Voodoo A shop full of Voodoo supplies and items from other spiritual traditions. Lots of handmade pieces from around the world — everything felt genuinely charged. Voodoo Authentica Inc Focuses mainly on authentic Voodoo goods. The owner is a practicing priest. Leroy's Place Art & Gifts A gallery of subculture curiosities — the curation is wildly, wonderfully bizarre. Slow Down A bright, colorful boutique featuring local designers and artists. Everything here feels vibrant and alive. #NewOrleans #Travel #OffbeatNOLA #Subculture #VoodooNOLA 🎪🔮📿
