A Day Trip to the Santa Monica Mountains | Tips Included
The Santa Monica Mountains are nestled between Los Angeles and Thousand Oaks—technically part of the latter in terms of zip code. Just about 40 minutes from Downtown LA, this area is one of the precious natural reserves along the West Coast. We even spotted a Bobcat specimen (and a fridge magnet version!) at the little museum in the Visitor Center 🐾🏞️. We drove from Irvine to Thousand Oaks in the morning. With some traffic, it took nearly two hours 🚗💨. The wind-blown golden hills brought a strange sense of silence and calm—being out in nature like this truly makes you feel more alive. Thanks to its Pacific-influenced climate and diverse terrain, the Santa Monica Mountains attract plenty of outdoor enthusiasts. Popular hiking routes include Solstice Canyon, Circle X Ranch, Zuma Canyon, and Sandstone Peak 🥾⛰️. Need-to-knows: 1️⃣ Download offline maps before you go — AllTrails or Gaia are great apps to have. 2️⃣ For photography, bring a light camera. Heavy gear isn’t recommended. Late winter/early spring means mostly dry grass — April might be greener! 📸🌾 3️⃣ Trekking poles are a good idea. They reduce strain on long trails. Finish before dark — safety first! 4️⃣ Pack light. Don’t overcomplicate your hike 🎒✨ 💖 Visitor Center: You can get a stamp 🖊️, check out the small museum, and yes — I bought a rubber fridge magnet with a bobcat against lush green mountains (wish it looked like that right now!). There’s also a Spanish-style building behind it with lounge chairs — perfect for enjoying the view 😌🪑. Note: January may not be ideal — it’s windy, and the hills haven’t turned green yet. 📍 Address: 26876 Mulholland Hwy, Calabasas, CA 91302 #SantaMonicaMountains #LATravel #LosAngeles #WeekendIdeas #LAGetaway #ThousandOaks #OutdoorLA #HikingLA #CaliforniaNature
