A New Proposal Could Turn The Marina’s Iconic Safeway Into a 25 Story Housing Development
The Marina’s waterfront Safeway has been in the city for decades, first opening in 1959. The grocery store entered the cultural consciousness of San Franciscans when it became known as a place to meet singles, even earning the nickname “Dateway.” The Safeway is one of the main grocery stores in the popular neighborhood and has been frequented by many locals for years. Now, the Safeway could face some major changes , as a developer submitted a new proposal for the property. The San Francisco Chronicle recently reported that Align Real Estate had submitted plans to redevelop the property, adding a 25-story housing development above the renovated Safeway. The development would include over 700 units in the building, and a larger, renovated Safeway on the ground floor. Plans for the Marina Safeway are just the latest in new development proposals from Align. The firm has also proposed to turn the Safeway on Mission Street into an apartment building, with a Safeway on the ground floor. The firm also has plans to turn the Outer Richmond Safeway into two eight-story apartment buildings . Align also has plans for the recently closed Fillmore Safeway, turning it into an apartment building, without a ground-floor Safeway like the other development proposals. The proposal for the Marina Safeway has many mixed reactions from residents, and is formally opposed by San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie. Lurie told SFGATE that the Marina Safeway is not included in his recently passed Family Zoning Plan, which would allow denser housing in areas around the city, though not in this location. For now, the iconic Safeway is still operating, although its future is uncertain. The Marina Safeway is located at 15 Marina Blvd, next to Fort Mason Center . The store is also just a short walk from the Marina Green and the bustling commercial corridor on Chestnut Street. Source: https://secretsanfrancisco.com/marina-safeway-housing-development-sf/
