A Paradise for Egyptology Enthusiasts in London - Petrie Museum 🏺🦋

The Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, established in 1892 by the Department of Egyptian Archaeology and Philosophy at University College London, originally served as a teaching resource (but it’s now open to the public for free!). With over 80,000 artifacts, it holds one of the most significant collections of Egyptian and Sudanese antiquities in the world, second only to the Cairo Museum, the British Museum, and the Berlin Egyptian Museum. While the British Museum focuses on "large items," the Petrie Museum specializes in the details, showcasing the everyday life of ancient Egyptians from various periods and cultures. The museum is home to many personal items, including combs, hair curlers, mirrors, and razors, revealing the daily lives of ordinary Egyptians. 🪞💇‍♀️ Here, you can see everything from linen fragments from 5000 BC 🧵, the earliest "cylinder seals" discovered in Egypt, fragments of the first royal list or calendar, the oldest will on papyrus, the only surviving veterinary papyrus from ancient Egypt, to the oldest glass artifacts. There’s even a display where two entire walls are covered in ancient necklaces and bracelets—each piece incredibly delicate and beautiful! 💎👑 Despite the museum’s small size, the collection is vast, and many of the cabinets below the displays can be pulled open for a closer look. It’s a true gem for anyone fascinated by Egyptology and ancient cultures. What makes this museum special is not just the artifacts but also the way it sparks thoughts about museums, display styles, the merging of antiquities with contemporary art, and reflections on ancient cultures. 🧐🎨 Opening Hours: Tuesday to Friday: 1pm - 5pm Saturday: 11am - 5pm #London #MustVisitMuseums #LondonLife #LondonMuseums #UniversityCollegeLondon #PetrieMuseum #MuseumLovers #WeekendInLondon
