A Tiny Wine Window Just Opened In NYC—And It’s Straight Out Of Florence

This brand new wine window may be the one thing worth trudging to Times Square for! Buchette del Vino is bringing a taste of Tuscany to NYC, opening a brand new wine window just in time for summer. The concept comes from a centuries-old Florentine tradition . The Times Square Italian restaurant takes its name from the Italian term for these wine windows, “buchette del vino,” which translates to “wine holes.” Dating back to the 16th-century, these wine windows, which typically appear as arched openings on historical facades throughout Florence, made it possible for winemakers at the time to avoid paying shop taxes and rather sell their product directly to the public. A customer could simply knock or ring a bell, and get their own flask filled with wine. Today, Florence has over 180 wine windows continuing to preserve this unique aspect of the city’s heritage. And now, Buchette del Vino is bringing the tradition over to NYC! Similar to ones in Florence, NYC’s newest wine window comes up to about waist level so customers can easily reach for their glass of vino when they walk up. It officially opened on Monday, June 16th, so dare we say make a trip to Times Square asap... In addition to great wine, Buchette del Vino is serving up Tuscan classics, from mouthwatering paninis to fresh pasta and gelato.
