A Tour of 6 Religious Sites in Colombo
➡️ I visited 6 religious sites in Colombo, which added a humanistic depth to my trip to Sri Lanka. If you have enough time, it's recommended to pay a visit.🌅 ⭐️ Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharya, a Buddhist temple, free of charge. 🌄 🌌It's the farthest from the city center, about 8km away. The main hall has elephant stone carvings under its pillars, with strong exotic charm. The hall is decorated with exquisite murals, which combine Eastern and Western styles. The figures in the murals feel like the Eastern version of Adam and Eve, and there are also stories of Sakyamuni, which are worth seeing.⚡ On the day of my visit, I also watched a short elephant performance. The elephants were chained, which looked quite pitiful. There aren't many places to eat nearby, but there's a chain bakery called P&S. ⛈️ 🌟A mini cup of milk tea plus a samosa and a flaky pastry cost about 12 RMB, making it convenient to sit and have something to eat and drink while waiting for a tuk-tuk. ⏱ Visiting time: 40min+ ⭐️ Sri Ponnambala Vaneswarar Kovil, a Hindu temple, free of charge, highly recommended. Its opening hours are very short: 5:30-11:45; 17:30-20:00. Taking photos indoors is not allowed, but the interior is stunning.🏕️🏕️ The dimly lit room with flickering candlelight is like an underground palace, feeling like the palace in the VR game I played has come to reality. I saw local people pay the monks, after which the monks would open the shrine door to perform a small ritual. ⛲ 🌉Generally, the person praying would wave their hands over the candle flame (which is quite dangerous), and then the monk would dot holy water on their forehead and give them small flowers, etc. The monks' robes are slanted off the shoulder, and one foreign monk was super handsome! The alley at the back door is full of life.🌄 ⏱ Visiting time: 30min+ ✅ Nearby is St. Anthony's Shrine church, free of charge, ordinary, just a check-in on the way. ⏱ Visiting time: 5min. ⭐️ Jami UI-Alfar Mosque (Red Mosque), free of charge. Opening hours: 10:30-12:00; 13:15; 16:15-18:00. Enter through the iron gate of Gate 3, which is easy to miss. It's opposite the small commodity market on the path.🏔️🏔️ If your clothing doesn't meet the requirements, robes will be provided. 🏟️ The staff will lead you around, but there's not 🛤️much introduction. It's purely for taking photos, and the 6th-floor terrace is a great spot for photos. After the visit, it's recommended to take a citywalk to the Dutch Hospital area and have afternoon tea at T-lounge by Dilmah. There are few people on the way, but the buildings are beautiful. There are also small carts selling juice at the entrance of the mosque where you can stand and drink, but I didn't buy any for fear of needing to use the toilet. ⏱ Visiting time: 30min ⭐️ Gangaramaya Temple, a Buddhist temple. A combined ticket with the Sima Malaka (Water Temple) diagonally opposite costs 400 rupees, highly recommended.🎢🎢 Entering the temple feels like walking into a vintage museum, with many Chinese porcelain items, as well as ivory carvings, jewelry, etc. There's an elephant specimen in the courtyard, with its hair clearly visible, which is very spectacular, and there's also a stupa surrounded by Buddha statues.🌆🌆 🎪 There's a bodhi tree in the garden. The last Buddha hall is stunning, with Sri Lankan-style flying apsaras and murals combining Eastern and Western styles, making me sigh that Colombo truly deserves to be the crossroads of the East. ✅ Gangarama Sima Malaka (Water Temple). There's a somewhat scary-looking statue here. I'm curious about what it enshrines? You can watch waterfowl on the lake. 🏝️🏝️ On one side, there are rippling blue waves where waterfowl inhabit; on the other side, there are high-rise hotels.🏘️🏘️ It's both ecological and modern, and I'm very optimistic about the development of this city ‼️ ⏱ Visiting time: 15min+ ‼️ Tips: Except for the church, you need to take off your shoes in other places.🏚️ It's recommended to bring a pair of old socks to wear and then throw away (some roads are muddy), and a plastic bag to hold your shoes to prevent them from being taken away or someone asking for tips.🏫🏫 #Colombo
