📍 Alpen Rose | A Hidden European Steakhouse in Philadelphia
In the heart of Philadelphia's downtown, there's a restaurant called Alpen Rose that's easy to miss. With no flashy sign, it's a place where reservations are a must, and you'd walk right by without knowing it's a restaurant. Push open the heavy wooden door, and you step into what feels like a vintage, secret gentlemen's club. 🕰️ The dim lighting casts a warm glow on the dark wooden walls, and the leather seats and antique decorations exude an understated luxury. This place doesn't chase trends; it focuses solely on the quality of ingredients and the art of cooking. The highlight of the evening was the duck 🦆. A half-duck portion, with crispy skin that had a texture reminiscent of Peking duck and confit duck—crispy, sweet, and rich without being greasy. The duck was cooked to perfection, tender yet with a satisfying chew, and the fat was perfectly infused into the meat. Every bite was a layered explosion of flavor, with no gamey taste at all. It easily held its own against the signature steak. In comparison, the Wellington steak 🥩 was decent, with well-done puff pastry and slightly oozing juices, but it lacked that extra wow factor. (The one at the old Mandarin Oriental's MO Grill in Hong Kong is better.) The appetizer, Rockefeller oysters 🦪, were average but still better than most American restaurants. And the thick-cut bacon, a must-order at any steakhouse, was highly recommended here. Of course, the steak is the ultimate expression of dry-aging. Using top-tier USDA Prime beef, aged in-house to perfection, it offers a more intense meaty flavor and a tender, juicy texture. I recall the ribeye we had was aged for 40 days. The wine list is extensive. I chose the Refined No.01 🥃, an Old Fashioned with Applewood Smoke 🔥 as the finishing touch. The base spirit is Rye Bourbon, with a subtle smoky wood aroma. The drink is full-bodied, slightly sweet but not overpowering, and has a rich, layered flavor. It pairs perfectly with either the steak or the duck. If you're looking for a classic with a twist, this cocktail is worth a try. Alpen Rose isn't a trendy spot for Instagram posts. The restaurant is small and perfect for those who want to savor their meal in a relaxed setting. Next time I visit, I'll definitely order that duck again, along with another Old Fashioned, to relish this sophisticated yet innovative dining experience. #food #GourmetDelights #HiddenGems #PhiladelphiaFood #PhiladelphiaLife #RestaurantHopping #PhiladelphiaRestaurants #PhiladelphiaSteak
