August 17th | Imprisoned in Philadelphia ποΈπ
Eastern State Penitentiary A prison that you could spend a whole day exploring π°οΈπ° From architectural space design to the exploration of punishment forms, From exhibits of ruins to the echoes of words and sounds, This Philadelphia prison ranks among my favorite exhibitions ππΌοΈ. The last one that left me this awestruck was the shoe exhibition in Paris π πΌ. During the audio tour π§π£οΈ, I marveled at the prison's advancements and innovations: The first to use solitary confinement as the primary means to induce repentance π§ββοΈπͺ, With individual cells where inmates could craft and keep pets πΎπ οΈ. The first prison to establish a synagogue ππ, Originating from a pregnant prisoner's request to circumcise her baby πΆβοΈ. At the same time, I sighed at the historical shifts ππ°οΈ: Due to the surge in criminals and cost control, It transformed from solitary to communal dining π½οΈπ₯. With the prevalence of infectious diseases like tuberculosis, A hospital with operating and observation rooms was built inside the prison walls π₯π. Several figures stick in my mind π§ π: Today, it costs only a few cents more per day to feed a prisoner than it did 100 years ago π΅π. Nowadays, the government spends 2.6 times more on a prisoner than on a college student ππ°. States with both the highest and lowest murder rates carry out the death penalty βοΈπͺ. It compels deep reflection π€π: How much rights and dignity should prisoners, as human beings, have? What form of punishment can more effectively reduce crime? How can the financial strain caused by mass incarceration be alleviated? I concluded today's visit with an "inmate" photo at the entrance/exit and a Greek meal πΈπ΄. #EasternStatePenitentiary #Penitentiary ποΈπ
