Basel New Exhibition | Handcrafted Sci-Fi Aesthetics
Growth 📍 Kunstmuseum Basel, Basel, Switzerland In this exhibition, Hosnedlová merges sci-fi aesthetics with meticulously crafted handiwork, the former drawing inspiration from modernist architecture and the historical legacy of socialism. She grew up surrounded by modernist environments. 🌟 When she studied under Czech conceptual artist Jiří Kovanda at art school, she began experimenting with traditional silk embroidery techniques. The repetitive, labor-intensive process of creating images with layers of thread fascinated her, and the results looked so precise, almost industrially manufactured. The artist was captivated by this contradiction, and to this day, every embroidery is sewn by her own hands. 🖌️ Hosnedlová's initial embroidery patterns were based on existing images, including stills from post-war Eastern European films. Soon after, she began developing her imagery using protocols that define her subsequent practice: she creates non-public performances with unique gestures, brutalist backdrops, and retro-futuristic costumes, staged and photographed solely to provide images for her embroideries. 🎭 For her next exhibition, she will again draw on these performances for her embroideries—and in turn, she will design gestures, sets, and costumes for a subsequent series of embroideries. Constantly. Thus, each presentation of Hosnedlová's work over the past few years has included imagery from previous performances, and each exhibition or presentation also becomes the anticipated site and context. 🔄 In this exhibition, Hosnedlová once again merges sci-fi aesthetics with meticulously crafted handiwork, the former drawing inspiration from modernist architecture and the historical legacy of socialism.
