Battery Park in Manhattan was once a surreal beach π.
This beach was not originally open to everyone. But in Manhattan, people decide for themselves what a beach is. πΏπ It could be a sidewalk, a rooftop, a car hood, or even a huge landfill. From the late 1960s to the 1980s, after a large-scale plan failed, Battery Park became an artificial beach. πΏπ It became a strange gathering place for various groups of people, such as artists and students. Some even made a 15-foot sculpture out of garbage. By the year 2000, this free beach had disappeared, replaced by high-rise buildings and tidy parks. Nowadays, there are few places in New York that can make people feel as free as that landfill did. πΏπ These photos tell us that even when plans fail, something interesting and vibrant may emerge briefly. #pppoketresearch #Moodboard #BatteryPark #NewYork π
