Berlin's Underground World: Berliner Unterwelten 🌍
On a summer day in Berlin with temperatures soaring over thirty degrees, even the evening sun is still intense. Just walking down the street makes you sweat! To cool off, I decided to join a tour of the underground world that had been recommended to me. When it’s too hot to explore above ground, why not discover what lies beneath? 🌡️✨ Berlin's underground is quite rich, just like the surface, but it has experienced history in different ways. It now tells us unique yet familiar stories. 📚 There are currently eight different tours available in the Berliner Unterwelten, spread across various locations in Berlin. Many of these sites include WWII air raid shelters, defensive structures, subway tunnels, and escape routes dug by people trying to flee to West Germany during the division of East and West Germany. Each of the eight tours has its own theme and visiting locations, with information available on the official website. Guided tours are offered in both English and German, so you can choose based on your interests! 🇩🇪🇬🇧 I joined Tour 1: The Dark World, entering through a nondescript small door in Gesundbrunnen subway station. This tour primarily focuses on WWII underground air raid shelters and is packed with information. The history is heavy, but the guide’s storytelling is incredibly engaging! They cleverly intertwine the history of daily life in the shelters with people’s defensive efforts, making it captivating for the audience. During the tour, we also got to see images and remnants related to air raid defenses from the WWII era. Additionally, this tour incorporates the construction of the U8 subway line, nearly a century-old pipeline post office in Germany, and many fascinating stories about Berlin’s breweries and groundwater development! 🍻💧 #Berlin #BerlinLife #BerlinUnderground #BerlinUndergroundWorld #HiddenGemsInBerlin #Germany #Museum #BerlinMuseum #GermanMuseum
