Berlin Exhibition | Explore the Unconventional Creations of Ivana Baši
I visited Bašić's exhibition, titled Metempsychosis, which translates to "Rebirth of the Soul," just before it closed. The artist spent six years preparing for this showcase. While there aren’t many sculptures on display, the pneumatic sculpture installation is the largest piece in the gallery. It’s said that its first complete assembly happened just days before the opening, and the artist herself experienced the moment it operated fully nearly at the same time as the audience! 🎨 Every tiny component of the sculpture is the result of her careful thought and design, crafted in various workshops in Brooklyn, Chicago, Arkansas, and Oregon. From metal casting and glass blowing to pneumatics, CNC machining, and 2D/3D pipe bending, the final assembly involved Bašić and her assistants hand-gluing the pieces together. In a consumerist era, she remains committed to “handcrafting,” showcasing a highly technical approach while investing time-consuming processes—truly impressive! 💪 In an interview, she mentioned moments of breaking down in her studio, crying over a sculpture that showed no progress after months of effort. Yet eventually, the artwork naturally emerged from her hands. Bašić embodies the spirit of a fierce alchemist. 🦾 Each of her pieces is both gentle and violent, combining vastly different materials—wax, glass, bronze, stainless steel, and plaster silicone—into humanoid forms fixed to the ceiling and floor or embedded within walls. She arranges and blends these materials to push their limits to the extreme. 🌌 She describes the sculpting process as one of seeking shapes within clay, often feeling like she’s conversing with an invisible force, guiding her hands to bring these life forms into existence from the clay. ✨ #MustVisitMuseum #Artist #UniqueArt #NicheExhibition #Berlin #BerlinExhibition #WomenArtists #ArtGallery #ChroniclerOfRomanticLife
