Birmingham Jewellery Quarter Malaysian Cuisine: Kopitiam

A little gem I visited over a year ago, and today I just couldn’t stop craving the stinky beans, so I decided to give it another try. I heard online that tables are now in high demand and reservations are a must, so I gave them a call ☎️. The owner initially said they were fully booked and hung up on me, not very friendly 😅. But I was desperate, so I tried booking through Google Maps and managed to get a table for an hour later. When I arrived, it turned out there were plenty of empty seats, and the waiter didn’t even ask if I had a reservation. It seemed like the owner who answered the phone wasn’t very keen on doing business, but thankfully, the food was still delicious; otherwise, I would have been really disappointed. ✔️ **Kaya Toast** £3.5: This was my first time trying it. The bread was crispy, and the sauce looked plain but tasted sweet and went really well with butter. It was a great appetizer to start the meal. 😋 ✔️ **Stir-Fried Kway Teow** £11.5: A main dish full of wok hei (the unique flavor from stir-frying). It had a variety of ingredients like fish cakes, prawns, Chinese sausages, pork, and eggs. It was hard not to love it. Highly recommended! 🍳 ✔️ **Sambal Kangkong** £12: A slightly spicy dish that’s super addictive. If you don’t like spice, you can go for the garlic or fermented bean curd versions. 🌶️ ✔️ **Fried Squid with Sambal** £15: This dish had a strong Malaysian flavor. The okra was particularly delicious, and there was plenty of squid. The rice bowl version is a bit cheaper, but the portion is still quite large. 🍤 ✔️ **Fresh Orange Juice** £4: It was very sweet and refreshing. It’s rare to find freshly squeezed juice at such a reasonable price in a UK restaurant. 🍊 I was so eager to try everything that I ordered a bit too much for one person. Normally, you can expect to spend around £20-30 per person. 💰 #foodie #uklife #ukfood #britishfood #birmingham #universityofbirmingham #birminghamlife #birminghamfood #birminghamrestaurant
