Buffalo · The Art Museum Most Perfect for Snowy Days in North America
On my first road trip back to Toronto from New York, I stopped in Buffalo during a heavy snowstorm - so cold that my coffee left in the car overnight literally froze solid! ❄️☕ Not wanting to brave the freezing outdoors, I discovered this absolute gem of an art museum. 📍 AKG Museum, 1285 Elmwood Ave, Buffalo 💰 Adults $22 / College Students $20 🚫 Closed Tuesdays & Wednesdays The Buffalo AKG Art Museum is an architectural timeline in three acts: 🏛️ The original Neoclassical building (1905) constructed for the Pan-American Exposition 🔄 The 1962 Modernist expansion by Gordon Bunshaft adding a new auditorium and courtyard ✨ The stunning 2023 Jeffrey E. Gundlach Building by OMA's Shohei Shigematsu (where all these gorgeous photos were taken!) Nestled within Olmsted's Delaware Park (the landscape architect left several marks on Buffalo), the museum's transparent, open design creates magical dialogue with the snowy scenery outside. ❄️🏛️ The glass structures blur boundaries between interior and exterior, bringing the winter landscape inside in the most poetic way. Buffalo - this faded industrial city known mainly for wings and hockey games (seriously, the parking lots at anchor bars are full of Ontario plates!) - reminds us how architecture stands as monuments to a city's golden age. Even in decline, great buildings continue drawing pilgrims to witness past glory. History's rises and falls may be predictable, but we never tire of trying to understand them. After writing this, I suddenly have an urge to visit Hokkaido's art museums next winter... ✈️❄️ #ArchitectureDesign #ArtMuseum #Buffalo #NewYear #Gallery #Architecture #Snowscape #RoadTripViews #TorontoDayTrips
