Tucked away in West Hampstead is a true time machine—The Bohemia House. This fortress of Czech culture, originally gifted by President Edvard Beneš for Czech and Slovak exiles in London, still carries its legacy with pride and warmth. During the summer, the house itself may be quiet, but the sprawling garden out back comes alive. Czechs and Slovaks gather here in pairs, groups of friends, and whole families—chatting, drinking, and eating under the open sky. It’s more than a meal; it’s a ritual. 🌳👨‍👩‍👧‍👦💬 Let’s break down the experience: 🍻 Drinks They serve iconic Czech beers on tap—perfectly poured and impeccably fresh: Radegast from Ostrava – crisp and refreshing Budvar from České Budějovice – smooth and malty Pilsner from Plzeň – the golden classic Each pint is a tribute to Bohemian brewing tradition. 🍽️ Food The menu is a heartfelt homage to Central European comfort food: Fried Cheese (Smažený sýr) – golden, gooey, and utterly satisfying 🧀 Roast Duck with Dumplings (Kachna) – tender, flavorful, and soul-warming 🦆 Pork Knuckle (Pečené koleno) – slow-roasted and richly seasoned 🐖 We tried the Schnitzel and Duck—both cooked to perfection, served with Russian-style salad (though they’d never call it that!), soft red cabbage, bread dumplings, and fries. Absolutely divine! 👨‍🍳 Service Two friendly Czech guys held the fort at the front. I made the mistake of saying I’d lived there and that Czech was my second language—they lovingly (and at length!) corrected my grammar! 😄❤️ A fun, personal touch that made the visit even more memorable. 💷 Pricing Post-pandemic, prices have risen—mains now hover around £18, and beers around £7.
