Charlie Chaplin's "Former Home" Becomes a London Film Museum ❗
👍At the end of the last century in 1999, when I first came to the UK to study media, I heard about the relocation of the Museum of the Moving Image London on the South Bank of London. I thought I would be able to visit the new museum nearby in a few years, but instead, I received the news of its permanent closure. Currently, there is no such film museum operated by the official British Film Institute in the UK, only privately run institutions. 👍Two years ago, I took a tour to visit The Cinema Museum London, located in the Lambeth district of South London. 👍The London Film Museum, The Cinema Museum London, is a privately operated charity. Its current location is a former workhouse where the British film master Charlie Chaplin lived as a child. In 1896, Chaplin, along with his mother and brother, arrived here. After Charlie's father left, the family had no stable income and was destitute. What's worse, Charlie's mother, Hannah, suffered from mental illness. 👍Over the next few years, the family came in and out of this workhouse until Charlie was 14 years old, when Hannah was sent to a mental institution. This tragic experience had a profound impact on the young Charlie, which can be seen in his later work in Hollywood and the affinity his characters had for the poor. 👍Today, this place is home to the London Film Museum. The two founders began their collection career in the 1980s when cinemas across the UK were closing down, saving many artifacts in the process. All museum staff are volunteers, and visits are only possible by booking tours or attending events/ screenings through the official website. They are also fundraising for survival on a long-term basis. The museum houses a rich collection and is highly significant, highly recommended to all film enthusiasts! #UK #London #Film #Museum #CinemaMuseum #CharlieChaplin #CharlieChaplin #chaplin #Cinema #Workhouse #NoteInspiration #DailyFragmentsPLOG #ChroniclerOfRomanticLife
