Chelsea Physic Garden in London 🌿

The Chelsea Physic Garden was founded in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries to grow medicinal plants for medical research and teaching, making it the third oldest botanic garden in the UK. 🌿 In 1713, the famous physician and naturalist Sir Hans Sloane purchased the adjacent Chelsea Manor and in 1722 leased the garden to the Society of Apothecaries at a nominal rent of £5 per year. The lease required the garden to supply 50 plant specimens annually to the Royal Society until a total of 2,000 were provided. 📜 This agreement boosted the garden’s development, making it one of the world’s most diverse botanic gardens during Philip Miller’s tenure as head gardener from 1722 to 1770. In 1983, the garden became a registered charity and opened to the public for the first time. 🌟 The garden houses over 5,000 species of medicinal, edible, and useful plants. It is home to the largest olive tree in the UK and the northernmost outdoor grapefruit tree in the world.
