Chichén Itzá: Temple Run Comes to Life

Chichén Itzá (Spanish: Chichén Itzá; Yucatec Maya: Chiʼchʼèen Ìitshaʼ, meaning "At the mouth of the well of the Itza") is a vast pre-Columbian archaeological site. Built by the Maya civilization in northern Yucatán, Mexico, it stands as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. From the 6th century BC through the Classic period (2nd–10th century AD), Chichén Itzá thrived as a major Mayan hub, reaching its zenith as southern cities declined. The later structures showcase Toltec influences—once thought to signal invasion, now recognized as cultural exchange. By 1221 AD, revolts and burnt ruins (still visible!) marked its decline, shifting power to Mayapán. Even Spanish conquistador Francisco de Montejo briefly occupied it in 1531. #Mexico #Chichén Itzá
