Cologne | Still Amazed by the Cathedral After 13 Years ⛪️

In 2011, I visited Cologne for the first time, and the Gothic cathedral left a deep impression on me. Now, 13 years later, it still looks the same as I remember. Even after visiting many churches across Europe and experiencing a bit of aesthetic fatigue, I was still a little blown away by its grandeur (though some parts are currently under renovation). 🛠️ Hohe Domkirche St. Peter und Maria, known as "the place closest to God," has a history that dates back to early Christian times. In 313 AD, Saint Maternus was the first bishop of Cologne to be mentioned. Within the realm of possibility—though today's research cannot confirm it—it is believed that a Roman episcopal church may have stood in this very area during his time. At that time, this area was located in the northeastern part of the city, close to the walls and the northern gate. 🏛️ Construction of the cathedral began in 1248, with many interruptions, and it was not completed until 1880, when it was declared finished by Emperor Wilhelm I. Covering an area of 8,000 square meters, its two spires on either side of the main door rise to an impressive 157.38 meters, like two sharp swords piercing the sky ⚔️. The church’s bell tower holds the Great Bell of St. Peter, which weighs an astonishing 24 tons! 🔔 Inside, the cathedral features 10 chapels, all built from polished stone, with over 10,000 square meters of windows on the upper walls. These stained-glass windows depict scenes and figures from the Bible. As the largest church in Germany, it symbolizes the unity of religion, nationality, and art in the country, and holds many priceless artworks. In 1996, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the world 🌍. #EpicLiveShot #Fragments #TrainToGermany #CologneTravel #CologneCathedral
