Conquering Nepal Without English: Kathmandu & Pokhara Guide
Preface (Some Ramblings): If you lack confidence, try relying on courage instead. Arrival ✈️: After clearing customs at Kathmandu Airport, you'll find currency exchange and SIM card counters inside (no need to rush—walk further to find two adjacent shops). The SIM card vendor speaks Chinese and will activate it for you. I got a 7-day unlimited data plan for ~25 RMB. Outside, taxis wait on the right. If you have ride-hailing apps and can communicate via phone, you can book cheaper rides (pickup is outside the parking lot). Airport taxis to Thamel cost ~900 NPR—insist on AC cars (I bargained an unofficial cab down to 800 NPR). Then brace yourself for Kathmandu's dust, traffic, and exhaust fumes—keep your mask handy at all times. Currency Exchange 💰: Kathmandu: Jiangnan Pharmacy (1005 RMB → 19000 NPR. Avoid Chengdu Restaurant). Pokhara: Peace Restaurant (staff speak Chinese; 1500 RMB → 28200 NPR). Pokhara's rates are worse, so exchange more in Kathmandu if possible. Transport 🚗🏍️: Use inDrive (requires local SIM; DM me if you need download help). Options: Motorbike taxis (fast for short trips). Non-AC cars (cheaper but nausea-inducing). AC cars (pricier but comfortable). Pro tip: Drivers will call—hand your phone to locals to explain your location. Domestic Flights ✈️: Booking through your hotel saves money (my DIY Ctrip ticket was overpriced; 45-seater planes felt safer). Note: Kathmandu’s international and domestic terminals are separate but a 10-min walk apart. In Pokhara, ride-hailing apps struggle at the airport (cars won’t enter; walk left along the road and marvel at China-built infrastructure). Accommodation 🏠, Food 🍽️ & Bars 🍻 (To be updated if I stop being lazy). #Kathmandu #Thamel #Nepal #NepalTravel #Pokhara
