Discover a Stunning Cathedral ⛪️ | Near London & Cambridge
The magnificent Peterborough Cathedral, which took 120 years to complete, boasts an awe-inspiring west facade with three towering arched doorways welcoming visitors.💕 Divided by the central crossing tower, the Nave on the west features a ceiling adorned with geometric frescoes (dating back to 1250!), while the eastern section dazzles with a blue sky-like ceiling decorated with golden bosses and stars. Both are masterpieces, but the Nave’s ancient artwork is particularly breathtaking.❤️ Another ceiling highlight is the "Christ and the Twelve Apostles" in the East End Apse. This vibrant painting depicts Jesus as the vine and the apostles as branches, intertwined with leaves, fruits, and birds—a truly unique portrayal.😍 But what fascinated me most was the tomb of Katharine of Aragon, Henry VIII’s first wife.😁 After being exiled to Kimbolton Castle, Katharine passed away in 1536. Denied a state funeral in London, she was laid to rest in Peterborough with a grand ceremony.🤣 Her tomb, inscribed with "Katharine Queen of England" in gold, is adorned with pomegranates—a symbol from her coat of arms representing fertility. Sadly, despite her hopes, she never bore a male heir.😍 Around the tomb, engravings recount her life, and nearby, two cross-stitch artworks—one of her portrait, the other of her emblem—pay tribute. Katharine popularized embroidery in England, introducing techniques from her Spanish homeland.😘 After exploring, I lingered in the vast, quiet cathedral, accompanied only by the resounding organ music. Later, I attended the Choral Evensong before stepping outside, where a festive ice rink buzzed with joyful holiday tunes.😁 #London #DayTrip #Travel #UK #Cathedral #Architecture #History #Cambridge #ExploreUK
