Enough with the Overhyped Restaurants in Hawaii… I’m Over It! 😤
Having visited Oʻahu more than six times and spent over half a year here in total, I’ve officially hit my limit with the same old tourist traps 🚫🍽️. But this trip? I dug deeper and uncovered some truly special gems — the kind locals keep to themselves. Here are my latest (and greatest!) finds: 🍲 Sandy’s Cafe – A Taste of Guangzhou in Chinatown Thanks to a local friend’s tip, I stepped into this unassuming spot and felt like I’d been transported to Guangzhou! 🍗 Must-orders: Roasted Duck & Char Siu (BBQ Pork) – the char siu is so good, I went back three times in one week! Scallion Oil Chicken – tender and fragrant 🍃 Iced Lemon Tea & Milk Tea – pro tip: mash the lemon with your straw to unleash all that zesty flavor! 🍋 🍖 Carp Dori Yakitori – Cozy Izakaya Vibes Recommended by a Japanese friend — this place offers solid yakitori and a relaxed atmosphere perfect for drinks and small plates 🍶. 💰 Great value compared to other skewer spots in Waikīkī! 🍧 Waiola Shave Ice – The OG Hawaiian Shave Ice A childhood favorite of my local friends — they swear it has “the fluffiest ice” on the island! ❤️ Go for the Azuki Bowl (red bean shave ice) — it’s a classic, not too sweet, and totally satisfying. 🚫 Skip the neon-colored syrups — keep it real! 🧇 Waffle and Berry – Brunch Worth the Hype With 1,500+ reviews and a 4.9-star rating on Google, this Waikīkī brunch spot is a must! 🍓 Their waffle bowls topped with ice cream, açaí, and fresh fruit are a delicious (and very Instagrammable) calorie bomb 💣📸 🍍 Fancy Fresh Fruit Shop – Smoothie Heaven Don’t let the simple look fool you — this little shop serves the freshest smoothies and tropical fruits in town! 🥤 You can mix 2–3 fruits — we tried watermelon + lychee and it was naturally sweet and refreshing. 💡 Tip: Add banana, strawberry, or kumquat if you prefer less sweetness. 🐟 Hawaiian Style Kitchen – Hidden Gem at KCC Market A humble stall inside KCC Farmers’ Market! 🧄 Their garlic shrimp in white sauce was a bit rich for me, but the steamed snapper? Tender, flaky, and full of flavor — a total win! ❌ Spots You Can Skip Tamago Pork Onigiri – Cute, but the spam made the rice too oily 🍙 Heavenly – Just… meh. Nothing stood out — not bad, but not memorable either. 🌺 I’m already excited to uncover more hidden gems next year! Have you found any under-the-radar favorites in Oʻahu?
