Europe Day 26: Frienz's superb pasta + Piazzale Michelangelo
For dinner, we went to La Buchetta, a highly rated restaurant. We arrived around 7:30 PM and luckily got a table after a 5-minute wait. For starters, we ordered burrata and chicken liver, though the latter's appearance was unappetizing, it was surprisingly flavorful. We chose two pasta dishes from page 8 of the menu. I had the Angel and Demon pasta, which was incredibly tasty but could have used more spice in the sauce. We also tried the 'dumpling' Raviolone with blue cheese sauce, which was very heavy on the cheese flavor. The bill was presented uniquely, tucked into an Italian gesture figurine, adding to the experience. Originally, we planned to dine at La Giostra, another top-rated spot, but couldn't secure a reservation. The queue for those with reservations was on the left, while walk-ins were on the right. Despite arriving promptly at 7 PM, we waited 20 minutes and saw reserved tables still occupied, so we opted for La Buchetta instead. Italy is incredibly hot and humid, despite temperatures only reaching 26-27 degrees Celsius. It feels like being in a sauna with no breeze. Restaurants charge a seating fee ("Coperto") per person, and even tap water isn't free; they charge for what looks like ordinary tap water. After dinner, we ventured to Piazzale Michelangelo to catch the sunset. Climbing up there was exhausting due to the heat and swarms of mosquitoes; one even bit me on the finger! The square is Florence's most famous scenic overlook, dedicated to Renaissance artist Michelangelo. It features bronze replicas of his famous works, like the David statue in the center and allegories from Florence's San Miniato Church. These replicas, originally marble, were transported here in 1873 using nine pairs of oxen. #Florence #FlorenceFood
