Flores Island Travel Guide for May 🌸✈️
TL;DR: Mornings are nice ☀️, afternoons often turn cloudy/foggy 😮💨🌫️. Didn’t get to see the famous lagoon. Overall experience: 3-4/5 stars. Based on my 3-day trip in May. Transport 🚗 Flew into Flores from Lisbon. Also accessible from Porto and Zurich. Rental Car: Limited automatic cars—book online in advance! Download offline maps—signal is weak across the island. ⛽ How to fuel at Galp station (across airport): Enter pump number → insert card → refuel → return to confirm. You can also get taxi info at the airport info desk 📞 or book tours at "Experience OC" opposite the terminal. ⚠️ Limited availability—better to book tours (or Corvo boat trips) via WhatsApp in advance. Weather ⛅ Mornings = blue skies & sunshine 😍 Afternoons = unpredictable, foggy, often like Silent Hill Wind and rain can vary drastically within short distances. 🚁 Fly drones with caution! Attractions 🌫️ Near the airport Central lagoons: Miradouro da Caldeira Negra e da Caldeira Comprida Central-west waterfalls: Cascata da Ribeira do Ferreiro / Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro / Trailhead Ribeira Grande Waterfall West: Fajã Grande North: If driving from central area—unpaved mountain roads ⚠️ Not recommended in bad weather! Better to go up from the airport. South: Pretty chill 👍 My Drone Spots 📷 Miradouro da Moita Alta (on the way up from airport) Waterfalls: Parking for Trailhead to Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro Fajã Grande: Park at Cantinho da Fajã or near the coast. My DJI Air 3 even reached The Westernmost Point of Europe! Stay 🏨 Booked Santa Cruz Villas (near airport, with washer) on Booking.com Food 🍴 Restaurante "O MOREÃO": Their blue fish was delicious 🐟 "O Mergulhador": Popular + slow—reserve ahead! Restaurante "Macau": Cash only 😂…but I finally got my fried rice!
