It is situated between the mouths of Bordeaux's two main rivers—the Garonne and the Dordogne—and serves as the main entrance to the city from the port. It is the passageway to the Palais de l'Ombrière, the residence of the Dukes of Aquitaine, which has been the seat of the Bordeaux Parliament since 1462. On the city walls, there is a gate that leads to the sidewalk.
