Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation
Upon entering the Gilder Center, visitors will find themselves in the five-story-high Kenneth C. Griffin Exploration Atrium, which is illuminated by natural light from a large skylight. 🌇The design of this building is inspired by the way wind and water sculpt landscapes, as well as the erosion of ice by hot water. 🌊 The textures, colors, and flowing forms of the Griffin Atrium are inspired by the canyons of the American Southwest. This design also enlivens the grand entrance of the Gilder Center, evoking feelings of awe, excitement, and a desire to explore. 🌄 🌿 Its striking structure is created by spraying concrete directly onto steel reinforcement, without using traditional formwork. 🌇This technique is known as "shotcrete." The hand-finished shotcrete bridges and openings physically and visually connect visitors to the new exhibition halls. These halls, along with the museum's exhibition departments, educational spaces, and collection facilities, are all designed by Ralph Appelbaum Associates. 🌿 They create a welcoming line of sight that encourages people to enter and move through the entire building. 🌟 The verticality of the Griffin Atrium is also a key sustainable feature, providing natural light and air circulation to the building's core. 🍃 📌Architectural Design: Studio Gang Address: 415 Columbus Ave, New York, NY 10024, USA 📐Building Area: 230,000 square feet (about 21,367.70m²) 📷Photographer: Iwan Baan #ArchDaily #ArchitecturalDesign 🌺
