🏠 Pergamon Museum ☀️Berlin, a city steeped in history, boasts a variety of artistic forms and styles, with the world-renowned Museum Island at its heart, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This island includes the Old Museum, the New Museum, the National Gallery, the Bode Museum, and the Pergamon Museum. Each museum has its unique charm, but the Pergamon Museum is particularly famous for its collection of large ancient architectural fragments, making it the dazzling star of the island. ☀️The Pergamon Museum is considered one of the most important cultural history museums in human history. Pergamon was the economic and cultural center of the Hellenistic world around the turn of the era. The famous Pergamon Altar, the last monumental religious artwork of ancient Greece, was built by King Eumenes II between 180 and 165 BC on a hilltop to honor Zeus and Athena. ☀️In the 1870s, German engineer Carl Humann began excavating the ancient city of Pergamon on Turkey's western coast and discovered fragments of what might have been a temple from Pergamon. At that time, the Turkish government was unable to focus on cultural preservation, so they agreed to let Germany transport the excavated artifacts back to Berlin. This magnificent altar was relocated to Berlin over five years by the Germans, who commissioned a renowned architect to design a dedicated museum to house this Greek wonder. To accommodate these artifacts, Berlin decided to build the Pergamon Museum specifically for them. ☀️The Pergamon Museum's collection spans over 6,000 years of history and features three exhibition sections: the Antiquities Collection, the Museum of the Far East, and the Museum of Islamic Art. The collection is rich and historically significant, including treasures like the Pergamon Altar from the 2nd century BC, the Ishtar Gate of ancient Babylon, the façade of the Islamic Shah Mosque, and the Aleppo Room, among other precious artworks and artifacts from ancient Greek, Roman, and Persian civilizations.
