Helsinki's Church in Harmony with Music 🎵💒
💛There used to be a poetic and metaphysical saying, "Architecture is frozen music." I thought at the time... architects sure know how to elevate their own worth. Later, I saw an interview in a magazine with a young person who was somewhat famous for his work in both music and architecture. He said that architecture is not frozen music, architecture is frozen concrete. I slapped my thigh and laughed, well said. 💛It wasn't until ten years later when I arrived in Helsinki. Temppeliaukion kirkko, also known as the Church of the Rock, is a Lutheran church, also called the "Rock Church." It's a very special church, carved out of exposed granite into a circular space, with a huge copper dome made of 22 kilometers of copper strips. The design of the skylight allows light to fall in an orderly manner, like a musical scale. 💛It's already an unforgettable building in itself. But I didn't expect to encounter a rehearsal of the Finnish wind orchestra during my visit. 💛It just so happened to be a wind orchestra. The raw, deep, and mournful tones of the brass instruments (which are also the most brilliant parts of Finnish symphonies) harmoniously matched the roughness of the exposed rock, the subtle sheen of the copper dome, and the naturally falling light, as if the building itself was playing. How to describe it, I felt like I was sitting inside a musical instrument, never having experienced such closeness between a building and music itself, not even in a professional concert hall. 💛It is said that the rough and porous surface of the granite, along with its cavities, perfectly fulfills the function of sound-absorbing materials needed for the walls of a professional concert hall, making this place not only a religious site but also the most popular venue for symphony performances in Helsinki. In turn, such a building appears so fittingly in Helsinki, a city that loves symphony music. It's incredibly interesting. #GreatValue #Helsinki #FinnishArchitecture #ArchitecturalDesign #NordicTravel #Symphony #Sibelius #Travel #ClassicalMusic #HistoricalBuildings
