Helsinki's Red and White Churches ⛪

🔺The two most famous churches in Helsinki (Didn't go into the Rock Church because of the admission fee) 🔺White Church / Helsinki Cathedral The cathedral of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland, located in Senate Square in the city center, is one of Finland's most famous landmarks. It was designed by German architect Carl Ludvig Engel in the neoclassical style and completed in 1852. Due to its white color, Helsinki Cathedral is also known as the "White City of the North." In the old days, sailors at sea would see the church as a sign that they were approaching Helsinki. 🔺 Red Church / Uspenski Cathedral An Eastern Orthodox Church, also known as the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God, located on a hill in the Katajanokka district, overlooking the harbor. In the 19th century, when Finland was under the rule of the Tsar, Alexander I ordered the construction of an Orthodox church in Helsinki to meet the needs of the faithful. It was designed by Russian architect Aleksey Gornostayev, but unfortunately, the construction began after his death in 1862 and was completed in 1868. The cathedral is famous for its red brick walls and golden domes. #HearingTheTurnOfTime#FinlandTravel #Finland#Churches #CulturalHeritage
