I spent five hours exploring the aircraft carrier museum in New York ❗
I’ve been to all the major tourist attraction museums in New York before, and I couldn’t think of anywhere else to go on the weekend. I stumbled upon this aircraft carrier museum and didn’t expect it to keep me engaged for almost five hours! It was well worth it!! The Intrepid is a retired aircraft carrier. There’s the flight deck with fighter jet models, the upper operational space of the carrier, the museum area below the deck, a Concorde supersonic airliner (tickets need to be purchased in advance), and the interior of a submarine—each section could be explored for an hour. ▶️ Flight Deck Area It mainly features second and third-generation fighter jets from the '50s to '80s. The A12 stood out with its all-black body, looking very stealthy. The F14 Tomcat is the model that Tom Cruise flew to take down three Su57s in “Top Gun: Maverick,” although it’s unrealistic for a third-gen jet to beat three and a half generation jets. There’s also a MiG-21 that was captured by the U.S. military🥹 ▶️ Upper Operational Space Through the door on the deck, up the stairs, you enter the crew’s work area, where you can see complex systems of buttons, steering wheels, and radar instruments. Staff are on hand to answer questions. The space is quite narrow; chubby people wouldn’t be able to work on the carrier🥹 ▶️ Lower Museum Area You can spend a long time here, with areas restored to look like the crew’s dining and living quarters. The center of the bottom level is very spacious, with many models on display. There’s a simulated cockpit for free where you can experience landing a fighter jet. At the end, there’s an additional paid F4/F18 fighter jet cockpit experience with high realism. The cockpit can rotate 360°, giving you the thrill of being upside down in the air. It’s a two-seater; the left side is for the Pilot controlling the flight direction and rotation, and the right side is for the Gunner responsible for firing. My friend and I were screaming and laughing non-stop for those few minutes because we couldn’t control the direction or hit the targets and kept getting flipped around. We’re planning to go to Russia🇷🇺 next year to experience a real fighter jet, the L29. Next to it is a more gentle option, a 4D movie where you wear 3D glasses and sit in moving seats to experience a fighter jet taking off from the carrier, engaging in combat, and then returning. These are 18🔪 and 15🔪 respectively for separate tickets. Since you’re already here, I think it’s worth it. ▶️ Submarine The interior is very narrow, like a capsule, and you have to move through slowly. But it has everything, from the control room, dining room, bunks, shower room, bathroom, to the torpedo launch area. You can feel the cramped space with thin air and narrow beds. I thought I’d be done in 2-3 hours, but I ended up staying for almost five. You can also take a walk along the Hudson River on your way out. #Aeroshow #SimulatedFlight #FighterJet #FirstPersonViewFromACockpit #AircraftCarrier #TravelUSA #NewYork #NewYorkTravel
