I.M. Pei-Designed German Historical Museum

Yesterday, I visited the retrospective exhibition “Life is Architecture” on I.M. Pei—and was once again moved by his works. Looking back at photos from my past visits (Suzhou, HK, Washington D.C., Paris), I realized there’s one highly accomplished piece of his that seemed absent from the exhibition: Berlin’s German Historical Museum (with a unit cost of approximately 100,000 ). Let me reflect on this gem: 1. Modern Volume Blended into the Old Town 🏙️ Located on Unter den Linden, the project is an extension rooted in Berlin’s historic district. The new volume and connecting structure integrate seamlessly with the old arsenal building. Using the design technique of “contrasting solidity and void,” it stands out without feeling abrupt—a masterclass in harmonizing old and new. 2. Geometric Elements: Circles & Triangles ✨ As shown in the floor plan triangular and circular shapes overlap and interweave within the limited site. This modernist approach feels more sophisticated than that of Pei’s other museums (e.g., the East Building of the National Gallery). What’s more, these geometric concepts are skillfully translated into even the finest details—showcasing Pei’s mature design language. 3. Exquisite Construction Techniques 🛠️ Completed in , the building’s details are as elegant as works of art. From the handrails , revolving doors, and window openings to the junction of curved glass panels , such craftsmanship remains rare even today . The materials feel “high-end”—a testament to Pei’s pursuit of quality. 4. Insights: Consistency & Evolution in Design 📜 The design philosophies and techniques summarized at Pei’s Shanghai retrospective are his consistent principles—effectively reflected in every project and further refined in new ones. While traces of his other works can be seen here, this museum is more than a repetition: it’s a continuation and evolution of his iconic style. #IMPei #IMPeiShanghaiExhibition #GermanHistoricalMuseum #MuseumDesign #LifeIsArchitecture #Berlin #ArchitecturalDesign #IMPeiWorks #LookUpToArt #FascinatingArchitecture
