Iwami Ginzan: A World Heritage Site ๐
On the afternoon of December 6th, I visited Iwami Ginzan. Located in the ลmori District of ลda City, Shimane Prefecture, Japan, Iwami Ginzan is a silver mine that became Japan's 14th World Heritage Site in 2007. ๐๐บ It was also the first mining site in Asia to be registered as a World Heritage Site. ๐The site includes the "silver mine ruins and mining towns," "Iwami Ginzan Silver Road," and "ports and harbor towns," each with its own unique attractions. ๐ฐ Our destination was the Ryugenji Mineshaft (tunnel). ๐๐บ Upon arrival, we first visited the exhibition building , which introduced the history and mining techniques of Iwami Ginzan. ๐Through artifacts, models, and videos, visitors can experience its value as a World Heritage Site. ๐ฟ It has been discovered that there are over 900 mineshafts of various sizes in Iwami Ginzan. ๐๐บ Among them, the Ryugenji Mineshaft is the second largest and was in use until 1943. ๐After leaving the exhibition building, we walked through a forest trail (the hike was quite pleasant) to reach the Ryugenji Mineshaft. The mineshaft is very low, and you can imagine how tough the working conditions must have been. ๐ฒ ๐๐บ #MyTravelStories2023 ๐#CulturalHeritage ๐๏ธ#WorldHeritageSites ๐#JapanTravel ๐ธ
