London Attraction | The Miniature but Magnificent Fitzrovia Chapel
šØFitzrovia Chapel, located in the Fitzrovia area of London, is the sole surviving building from the Middlesex Hospital. The hospital was first established in the late 18th century and underwent several reconstructions and expansions during the 19th and 20th centuries, eventually closing in 2005 and being demolished in 2008-09. šThe chapel was designed by the renowned architect John Loughborough Pearson and built at the end of the 19th century. It showcases a typical Gothic style with lavish interior decorations, including golden and blue mosaics and Cosmati work. Pearsonās son, Frank Loughborough Pearson, carried on his fatherās legacy and completed the construction of the chapel. šļøOver time, the chapel has become a commemorative place for many donors and hospital staff, with the names of numerous donors engraved on plaques within the chapel to recognize their contributions to the hospital and the chapel. š°āāļøAfter the closure of Middlesex Hospital, the chapel underwent a comprehensive restoration from 2013 to 2015, preserving its historical and architectural value. The restored chapel was renamed Fitzrovia Chapel and has since become a hub for community cultural and artistic activities.
