Montreal Travel Recommendations & Food Diary

Montreal truly impressed me—the people here are vibrant and friendly, the streets are clean, and the metro feels safe (a stark contrast to many U.S. cities). And the FOOD! Even random takeout is incredible. On my first night, I ordered Thai delivery that blew away anything I’ve had in the States. 🍽️ Food Highlights (in order of photos): 1️⃣ Henri Brasserie My first meal in Montreal and an instant favorite. The sea bass was the best I’ve had in North America, the foie gras was divine, and the beef melted like butter. Every dish had layers of flavor. 2️⃣ Brasserie 701 Walked in after the Notre-Dame light show. The lamb gnocchi was heavenly—perfect texture and seasoning. Salad was fresh and crunchy, mocktails decent, desserts meh. The server was sweet but got swamped later. 3️⃣ Monarque Only slight letdown. The octopus leg reeked when cut (sent it back). Bone marrow snails and steak were good but so greasy—couldn’t finish. 4️⃣ Sansotei Ramen Sainte-Catherine A lighter break from rich French food. The tomato ramen hit the spot—cleaner broth vs. U.S. versions. 5️⃣ Le Melisse Cozy brunch spot before exploring Old Port. Smoked salmon toast with celery/cumin was genius. Shakshuka was fine but forgettable. 6️⃣ St-Viateur Bagel & Café Mont-Royal Solid bagels, but unless you’re a bagel fanatic, skip. Cash/local cards only, and the floor was… questionable. 7️⃣ Restaurant L'Orignal Go for apps: bison tongue tacos and mushroom toast shone. Mains? Meh. 🏨 Accommodation: Honeyrose Hotel Used points—decent location (walkable to everything), but basic rooms feel cramped (~40m²). Thin walls: hear every neighbor and street noise (weekend bar crowds below = no sleep). 🚶 Sightseeing Mount Royal’s commercial strip: Feels like a spacious Georgetown (DC) with bike shops. Nice for strolls but skippable unless you love riverside walks. Public restrooms = gross. Ferris Wheel: Views are "discount Moscow Sparrow Hills" (okay but not breathtaking). Gift Shop Find: Adorable bear figurines at a souvenir store—a must for bear lovers! Plus free cookie samples. Final Verdict: Montreal’s charm lies in its energy, food, and walkability. Skip the tourist traps and just eat your way through the city—you won’t regret it. #Montreal #Canada #McGillUniversity #TravelEats #FoodieHeaven #CityGuides
