Moonga Sashimi

📍Moonga Sashimi I've been here several times, and it's my top pick for Japanese cuisine in the neighborhood—no one else comes close🫢. This tiny spot has that cozy, authentic vibe that makes every meal feel special. They serve the regular menu from Tuesday to Thursday, and only omakase on Fridays and Saturdays. As someone who doesn't eat seafood, I can't try the omakase (though I’ve heard rave reviews from friends who do! 🍣), so I'll just review their a la carte dishes😅. Beef Tataki: Delicious. The beef is seared just right, with a tender, pink center that practically melts. The ponzu sauce is sweet, sour, and refreshing, cutting through the richness of the meat perfectly 👅. It’s a light, flavorful start to any meal. Grilled Squid: To be honest, it's just so-so. The flavor is a bit bland, lacking that smoky punch I was hoping for 🦑. Not bad, but I’d skip it next time in favor of other dishes. Wagyu Roll: 🤤🤤🤤Amazing, amazing, amazing!!!!!!! I'll say it three times—it's so flavorful. The thinly sliced wagyu melts in your mouth like butter 🧈, and it doesn't feel greasy at all. The roll is topped with a drizzle of savory sauce and a sprinkle of green onions, making every bite a luxurious treat. This is a must-order—trust me, you’ll be dreaming about it later. Sashimi: Since I don't eat fish, I can't really comment on it hhh. But they're known for serving fresh, large pieces that seafood lovers go crazy for. They also have Hokkaido sea urchin, which my friend says is creamy and briny perfection 🌟. I recommend the aburi series—they lightly torch the meat, giving it a smoky aroma that adds an extra layer of flavor. Udon: A standard udon dish—nothing special, but no complaints either. The noodles are chewy, the broth is warm and comforting, and it’s a solid choice if you’re craving something hearty 🍜. They also gave us a Matcha Cheesecake🍵 for my birthday, which was good too! The cheesecake is creamy with a subtle, earthy matcha flavor that’s not too bitter—sweet enough to satisfy, but light enough to end the meal on a high note. Heads up‼️ The restaurant is tiny—just a counter with around 10 seats, which makes sense since they focus on omakase. So definitely make a reservation in advance‼️ But the atmosphere is great—intimate and relaxed, perfect for having a quiet chat with friends. You can also watch the chef prepare the food right in front of you; seeing them handle the ingredients with precision is like watching a work of art—it's really enjoyable 👨🍳✨. Another note⚠️: Moonga Sashimi is in Century Park. There's another location called Moonga Nori on Whyte Ave—the menus are completely different, and the food at Nori isn't as good in comparison! Don't mix them up! If you’re in the mood for high-quality Japanese food with a personal touch, Moonga Sashimi is the place to go. Even without trying the omakase, their a la carte dishes (especially that wagyu roll!) make it worth the trip. I’m already planning my next visit—this time, I’m bringing a seafood-loving friend to live vicariously through their sashimi 🍣! #Edmonton #MoongaSashimi
