Muni Heritage Weekend In San Francisco Features Vintage Transit Rides And Muni Merch
San Francisco is known for its public transit, specifically the historic cable cars that still operate throughout the city. While the cable cars may be the most iconic symbol of SFâs transit system, the city has many interesting historic transit vehicles. Every year, the city celebrates Muni Heritage Weekend to honor SFâs public transit with education events, activities, and even Muni merch. SFMTA and Market Street Railway are teaming up for this weekend, September 20-21 , for two days of events surrounding the history and future of the transit system in SF. Events will occur near the San Francisco Railway Museum, and visitors can ride vintage transit vehicles that are rarely used today. The vintage buses will offer a short, round-trip ride for visitors, returning to the museum. Some of the vintage transit vehicles you can expect are the 1896 âDinkyâ streetcar and the beloved Boat Tram thatâs been offering rides all summer. If you want to learn more about cable cars, we recommend reserving a tour with SF City Guides over the weekend, as they will be hosting guided walking tours about the cable cars throughout the weekend. You can also explore an exhibition titled *Muni Raised Me by SOMarts*, which features childrenâs perspectives of taking Muni. The interactive exhibition features a Muni bus transformed to honor the publicâs memories and connections to Muni. The San Francisco Railway Museum will be free to visit over the weekend, featuring information about the history of transit in the city. Finally, a Muni pop-up store will make its debut, selling fun Muni merch. You can shop for hats, t-shirts, socks, and even a Muni map puzzle. You can shop at the store in person or check it out online here. Muni Heritage Weekend is September 20-21 , at the San Francisco Railway Museum. You can learn more about this weekendâs events here.
