Nanaimo famous Japanese restaurant
đ 6750 N Island Hwy, Nanaimo, BC V9V 1S3 This is a famous Japanese restaurant in Nanaimoâseems like everyone who heads over from Victoria makes a point to stop here! The sashimi is definitely fresher, and other dishes like sushi are creative and unique. The place isnât huge, so youâll probably wait a bit during meal times, though grabbing a spot at the bar cuts the wait down. The servers are nice with friendly smiles đ, but maybe due to the tough hiring market, they didnât seem super familiar with the menu that day. We asked a question about hand rolls, and several servers didnât know the answerâwe had to wait for the manager to step in. â Omakase Sashimi Moriawase đ°68 A sashimi set where the chef picks 6 types of fish from the "Sashimi Prime" list (2 pieces each) based on whatâs fresh that day. You can also pay extra to upgrade with uni, caviar, etc. The plating is a bit of a letdownâtoo over-the-top and messy đ . Iâd double-checked with the server before ordering that thereâd be no surf clam or octopus (I really canât stand those!), and luckily, all the sashimi they brought out was right up my alley. There was lots of toro, all plump and fattyâsoft and creamy on the tongue, practically melting when I dipped it in wasabi and soy sauce đ€€. Pure enjoyment! The ama-ebi (sweet shrimp) was just okayâplump but not sweet. The server mentioned they could fry the shrimp heads for me, so they took two, but only brought one back. A bit chaotic! As someone who loves shrimp heads, I obviously asked for the other one, but honestly, the fried heads were nothing specialâovercooked with a burnt, greasy aftertaste đ. â Chop Scallop & Tobiko Cone đ°9 This scallop and tobiko hand roll is so good! Iâve said it beforeâscallops on the island are great, but Noriâs are even better: super fresh and sweet đŁ. The chef is generous with the portions tooâevery bite from start to finish has scallop in it. Along with the scallop, thereâs a little sushi rice, a strip of perfectly ripe, soft avocado, and some tobiko. Biting into the popping tobiko adds an extra burst of umami đ„. The sauce in the hand roll tastes like mayo but isnât heavyâmixed with the scallop sashimi and avocado, itâs just creamy, sweet, and fresh.
