New Orleans - Food Journey Stop 3 🍤

Mr. B's Bistro, 201 Royal Street. Mr. B's is one of the most famous upscale restaurants in the New Orleans dining scene. 🍽️✨ It’s located in the heart of the French Quarter, at the corner of Royal Street and Iberville Street. Cindy Brennan and her restaurant family opened Mr. B's in 1979, and it has since become a true French Quarter institution, known for expertly preparing local specialties in a relaxed bistro atmosphere. The restaurant is right along the street, very close to the French Quarter. But since we visited in the evening and the entrance isn’t very conspicuous, we almost missed it—except for the crowd waiting outside! 😅 Because of that, I forgot to take a photo of the front door, so I’ve borrowed a few photos online 🙏. Depending on the season, it’s best to make a reservation during peak times—otherwise, expect to wait at least 3 hours. You can get seated faster at the bar, but the tables are small, it’s a bit cramped, and the atmosphere is livelier. We were in a bit of a hurry and couldn’t wait long, so we grabbed a corner spot at the end of the bar. The bartender was super busy but provided great service 👍 and was really efficient. He recommended their two most famous dishes: BBQ Shrimp 🦐 and Gumbo Ya Ya. But since we’d already had gumbo that day, we went with the BBQ Shrimp and the daily special—black sea bass. The fish was okay, but the shrimp… were absolutely incredible 😋 (I immediately regretted not ordering two portions!). Despite the name “BBQ Shrimp,” it’s nothing like typical barbecue 😅. Six large shell-on shrimp are swimming in this rich, unique sauce—a little sweet, slightly reminiscent of Chinese braised dishes, but totally its own thing. Before I started, the bartender tied a bib on me and said, “You’ll need this—these shrimp are so good, you won’t eat them slowly, and the sauce will go everywhere!” I was skeptical, but oh—he was so right 🤣🤣. I couldn’t stop eating, and even used bread to soak up every last drop of that amazing sauce 😋😉. If you’re visiting New Orleans, you have to make time for Mr. B's—missing this would be a real shame! Mr. B's Bistro is closed from 2 PM–5 PM Wednesday through Sunday, and closed all day Monday and Tuesday. Plan ahead if you want to experience this unforgettable meal! 🗓️👌 Have you ever had a dish so good you wanted to order it twice? Or worn a bib proudly as an adult?
