New York | Crispy Fried Pork Belly (Guo Bao Rou) is So Good! 🍖
A hidden gem of Northeastern Chinese cuisine in the neighborhood! 🌟 🍃 I was scrolling late at night and saw a video of fried mushrooms from a Northeastern night market, which made me super hungry!😭 I found a Northeastern restaurant in Flushing that’s not very popular. I decided to give it a try, thinking even if it’s not authentic, at least I’ll be full! 🥩 Guo Bao Rou (Crispy Fried Pork Belly) The color is a beautiful golden brown and shiny. When you pick it up, the sauce clings to the meat in delicate threads, making it hard to separate. Each piece of meat is large, and I love the crispy texture of the coating. The pork tenderloin is lean but not tough, with a nice chewiness that stays crisp even after a while! The sweetness is just right, and they didn’t add ketchup to cater to local tastes, which I really appreciate.✔️ I think it would be even better if the vinegar flavor was a bit stronger, but it’s still delicious!🍃 🥟 Braised Fish Dumplings 🍃I love the chewy texture of Northeastern dumpling skins—they’re not soft and mushy. The fish filling doesn’t have much juice and feels more like a smooth and bouncy fish ball, similar to Hong Kong-style fish balls. It has a natural salty flavor, which can be a bit plain on its own, but dipping it in vinegar really enhances the taste. 🍄 Fried Mushrooms The legendary “Northeastern tempura”—this place uses enoki mushrooms, coated in batter and deep-fried to a crispy perfection. The aroma of the fried mushrooms mixed with the flavors of five-spice and Sichuan pepper is irresistible! They have a great chewiness and are even better than meat. Surprisingly, my friend and I finished all of them! 🍄 #NewYork 🌃🌟
