New York | The Brant Foundation Andy Warhol (2)π
The third floor mainly features works that explore the theme of death. π’π In White Disaster, he reproduced a car accident photo from the news 19 times to explore whether mass reproduction would make people numb to tragedy (this piece seems to be a relatively new acquisition, which was just bought by the boss for 86 millionπ€―). πNext to it is the 12 Electric Chairs, which depicts the electric chair used to execute two Russian spies in the 1960s. There was also a social debate about the abolition of the death penalty at that time, so this work feels more politically charged (it seems that these 12 paintings were collected one by one by the museum owner and then arranged by himself, which gives a sense of interesting re-creation). π’π There is also a skull painting on this floor, which is Andy's exploration of his own life after being shot. Some people say that the shadow of the skull in the painting is the profile of a baby, thus expressing a coexistence of death and rebirth. π There are also some works responding to Abstract Expressionism on this floor, such as Oxidation. #NewYork π
