NYC & NJ | Yunnan Food Fanatic, Happy Again!

All my friends know I love sour and spicy flavors, so Yunnan cuisine suits my taste even more than Sichuan food. I've traveled to Yunnan many times and have always been a huge fan of the local dishes. Living in the U.S., I sometimes crave those authentic tastes. I used to visit South of the Clouds in Manhattan and really enjoyed it. After moving to NJ, I discovered there's also one in Jersey City—so convenient! 🍴 South of the Clouds 📍 313 Grove St, Jersey City, NJ 07302 It's been a year since my last visit, and they've added many new dishes. This time, we ordered mostly items we hadn't tried before. 🧆 Crispy Tofu Puffs Crispy on the outside, soft and delicate inside—not oily at all. Perfect with chili powder! 😋 🌿 Puer-Style Stir-Fried Pork Throat Recommended by the server, and it did not disappoint! It had a refreshing herbal note, maybe from mint or mountain pepper, giving it an authentic Yunnan flair. The pork throat was wonderfully crunchy. 🍢 Yunnan-Style Skewered Beef Unique and delicious! Dry-roasted, fragrant beef bites—easy to eat one skewer at a time. 🍖 Braised Beef Shank Simple yet flavorful. The beef was well-seasoned and tender. 🍗 Roasted Chicken A personal favorite! The chicken legs were roasted to perfection—crispy skin with juicy meat inside. Paired with a dipping sauce featuring fresh bird's eye chili, it was incredibly satisfying. For mains, we tried two dishes: 🍜 Mengzi Rice Noodles with Beef Generous chunks of beef with a mix of tendon and meat. The red chili oil added a nice kick! 🍝 Old Kunming Noodles A dry-tossed noodle dish packed with flavor. Loaded with minced meat and large meat chunks, the noodles tasted handmade and had a great chew. A solid alternative to their rice noodles! Overall, this visit confirmed that they excel not only with noodles but also with Yunnan specialties. The roasted chicken, crispy tofu puffs, and stir-fried pork throat were standouts for me!
