South of the Clouds 云之南 Jersey City — Restaurant in Jersey City

Came here on a weekend day for a late lunch. Restaurant was not that busy with a few empty tables. Ordered by ourselves by scanning a QR code. Food was delicious, but unfortunately, service was horrendous.

Kid dropped chopsticks on the floor. No staff available to replace chopsticks. We wiped them down ourselves. No extra napkins available either. Also, for our ordered dish, an accompanying bowl of rice was missing, we had to flag down a waiter (again no one available) to ask for it. The staff who came over counted items on our table (rude and insulting). It’s a bowl of rice. Do you really think for a meal that cost $150+, we are trying to con you a bowl of rice?

Highlights for me: ✨Tofu Pudding Dry Mixed Rice Noodles $17.99 super flavorful, amazing slippery, gooey texture, I'm so inspired by this to use tofu pudding in meat sauces

✨Yunnan Fried Stuffed Tofu $13.99 maybe I just have a thing with tofu, but the texture contrast of fried tofu skin and soft tofu pudding was so good, the moment you bite in, the soft interior just bursts out with lovely soy flavor

Absolutely loved the food here, we’ve lived in the neighborhood for over 5 years now but only recently stumbled upon this restaurant. My favorites as a person who doesn’t eat meat are their cucumber salad 凉拌黄瓜 and Stir Fried Rice Noodles 云南风味炒米线. My fiancé loves Dehong Dai Roast Chicken Thigh and Boiled Beef w. Mint Rice Noodle Soup, the food is very flavorful and aromatic. I love spicy food, so definitely make sure you can handle the spice or double check with them to adjust the levels. 100/10...
